Octave & Mäertchen: pilgrimage and traditional market in Luxembourg
Since 1666, Luxembourg's largest pilgrimage honours Our Lady of Luxembourg for 15 days, with a popular market on Place de la Constitution.

The Octave is the annual pilgrimage honouring Our Lady of Luxembourg, taking place this year from 9 July to 23 July 2026. Born in 1666, this religious tradition has become the most significant event in Luxembourg's spiritual calendar. Thousands of pilgrims make their way to the cathedral to venerate the miraculous statue of the Virgin.
During these two weeks, Place de la Constitution hosts the Mäertchen, a traditional market that brings life to the neighbourhood around the Gëlle Fra. Craft stalls, local products, sweets and a festive atmosphere turn the square into a genuine village gathering place. The mood blends devotion with conviviality, drawing locals and visitors from all backgrounds.
From Gaume, Luxembourg City is less than an hour away. Take the opportunity to explore the UNESCO-listed old town and witness this centuries-old tradition. Plan for walking: the historic centre is best explored on foot, and cobbled streets are plentiful.
