Whitsun in the Gaume & Belgian Luxembourg: the best things to do this late May 2026
From the dancing procession of Echternach to the bonfire of Chenois and classic cinema in Luxembourg City — the Whitsun weekend of 2026 is packed with authentic experiences across the Gaume and beyond.

A Whitsun weekend of fire, pilgrimage and silver screen
May sunshine lingers over the Gaume hills, and the Whitsun long weekend promises a rich programme for curious travellers. Whether you are drawn to age-old traditions, classic cinema or lively village gatherings, the region has something genuinely special in store.
The Dancing Procession of Echternach: a one-of-a-kind spectacle
On Whit Tuesday — today — thousands of pilgrims and onlookers converge on the town of Echternach for the Dancing Procession of Echternach, inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list. In a slow, hypnotic rhythm — three steps forward, two steps back — the crowd advances through the streets to the sound of traditional music, in honour of Saint Willibrord. Mystical, moving and utterly unique in Europe.
The bonfire of Chenois lights up the Gaume night
On Wednesday evening, 27 May, the village of Chenois keeps alive one of those century-old traditions that give the Gaume its soul. A vast bonfire will rise into the spring night, drawing locals and visitors together around its warmth. The traditional fire of Chenois is the kind of simple, timeless moment you carry with you long after leaving.
Musical Blind Test in Virton: a night of fun and camaraderie
Also on 27 May, Virton's table tennis hall hosts the Blind Test des Iris — a musical quiz evening in a warm and easy-going atmosphere. Perfect for a group of friends or a relaxed family night out after a day of hiking through the Gaume countryside.
Art-house cinema in Luxembourg City: Varda and Monroe take the stage
For film lovers, the Grand Duchy's capital offers a fine double bill. The Théâtre des Capucins screens two very different classics: first Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Howard Hawks' sparkling Hollywood comedy with a radiant Marilyn Monroe, followed by Agnès Varda's poetic Cléo from 5 to 7, a gem of the French New Wave. Two magnificent evenings just a short drive from the Gaume.
Afterwork at the Musée gaumais: culture meets cocktails
On Thursday 28 May at 4:30 pm, the Gaume Museum in Virton sets the scene for an Afterwork with the DJ's of Square — music, cocktails and light refreshments in a wonderfully unexpected setting. A perfect, unhurried way to round off a long weekend.
These few days are a reminder of why the Gaume and its surroundings deserve far more than a fleeting visit. Should the spirit move you to stay a little longer, the Gîtes de Gaume offer the perfect base from which to explore this quietly extraordinary region, at your own pace.
