September, the gentlest of Gaume seasons

There is a particular quality of light over the Gaume in early September. Orchards hang heavy, terraces linger a little longer, villages recover their quiet after the summer rush — and yet the regional calendar has rarely been so tempting. For travellers unpacking their bags with us, here are a few dates worth pencilling in over the coming days.

A breath of southern France, minutes from the Semois

From 4 to 6 September, Le Village Provençal sets out the stalls of craftspeople and producers from the French Midi. Soaps, nougat, tapenade and singing accents: a Mediterranean interlude to wander through with a basket on your arm.

Art takes over Virton

The cultural highlight of the season, Cuest'Art – "Virton, ville tentaculaire" brings together 37 artists across 25 venues in town, on the weekends of 5-6 and 12-13 September. You drift from courtyard to studio, with a pop-up bar at the Galerie du Cheval Blanc as a natural meeting point. In a similar spirit, the Adret exhibition, running from 5 September to 18 October, invites you to look afresh at the landscapes around us — a fine prelude to a walk in the woods.

Forests, legends and world music

On 5 September, Escape Gaume in the forest on the Sentier Bayard at Maugis plunges young and old into the legend of the Four Sons of Aymon: riddles, undergrowth and a pleasant shiver or two. Lovers of open-air stages should head on 4 September to the Ans'Art Day Festival, a family gathering of street theatre and music, or to the Indian Summer Fest, from 4 to 6 September, where West African rhythms, Turkish sounds and DJ sets warm the evenings in the Saint-Hubert Forest.

Making it last
