Autumn Breaks in the Gaume: Mysteries, Games and Pumpkins to Savour This October 2026
From Arlon to Virton, the 2026 half-term holidays promise a feast of discoveries: museum investigations, giant games and cross-border talks set the pulse of the Belgian Gaume.

Autumn Breaks in the Gaume: Mysteries, Games and Pumpkins to Savour This October 2026
Autumn in the Gaume carries a wild sort of elegance that makes the region a natural stage for the Toussaint school break. Mist curling over the Semois, the first frost on the Ardennes hills — the local calendar has quietly prepared something special for families and culture lovers alike.
A detective story with ancient stones as props
On Monday 26 October, the Archaeological Museum in Arlon becomes a life-sized game board: Escape Game – Investigation at the Archaeological Museum challenges children and adults to crack a code among Gallo-Roman stelae. A rare privilege to walk through those millennia-old corridors with a purpose other than mere sightseeing.
The forest becomes the classroom
For children aged 6 to 12, Les secrets du bois perdu — a nature stage run at Skimup, a stone's throw from Virton — swaps screens for undergrowth. From 26 to 30 October, five days of woodland exploration bring back the joy of reading trees, animal tracks and the old legends of the Gaume. Perfect when your base is a small cottage just off the trailhead.
An evening to rethink borders
On Thursday 28 October, the Musée Gaumais in Virton hosts Imagine a World Without… Borders, led by Françoise Moreau and Christophe Sohn. Details here: a reflective talk on the line that separates the Gaume from Luxembourg as a human invention. Erudite and moving, at 7 pm, inside a building that itself honours local memory.
A whole day devoted to play
Also on 28 October, Faites du jeu ! fills the Gaume with giant board games, a storytelling caravan and two live shows. The ideal excuse to wander together, hot chocolate in hand, before Halloween night falls.
Does the pumpkin keep secrets too?
From 26 to 30 October, the Centre Alter Ego in Libramont-Chevigny celebrates Halloween with its "Secrets of the Pumpkin" workshops: dusk-light atmosphere, crafts and guaranteed giggles for the little ones.
These Toussaint days carry that particular sweetness of a holiday you'd happily stretch out. Whether you come for a weekend of Arlon investigations or a full week of wandering the deep Gaume, there is something quietly restorative about settling into a cottage among the hills and setting off each morning towards the next curiosity.
